What about bathroom breaks?

- Women may want to consider acquiring a urination device used by many experienced hikers. Here's another site.
- Here's an interesting article and another by backpackers familiar with the problem.

We drove the route and compiled this list of washrooms available. Of course there are washrooms available in the main towns. Do not expect to find facilities in the village of Perth Road or the entrance to Rideau River Provincial Park.

- Saturday, May 20, 27 km: At Glenburnie grocery 10km, and in Inverary, another 7km.
- Sunday, May 21, 28 km: No washroom available, possibly excepting Bedford Mills 18km. There would be a substantial extra walk at the mills.
- Monday, May 22, 30 km: No washroom available.
- Tuesday, May 23, 20 km: No washrooms available.
- Wednesday, May 24, 17 km: No washrooms available.
- Thursday, May 25, 27 km: The Lock Bistro and Store, about 10 km
- Friday, May 26, 24 km: A gas station 1 km and a portapotty about 13 km further.
- Saturday, May 27, 19 km: At the lock about 5km along, a portapotty at Claudette Cain Park another 3km, and several fast food places another 4 km later.
- Monday, May 29, 9 km: The walk is only 9 km, and urban, so hopefully shouldn't be a problem.

Accommodation

Unfortunately we have no sponsorship funding of any sort for this initiative.  All the walkers and other volunteers / participants are paying their own way for accommodation, meals and transportation.  If anyone wants to participate but has no transportation, email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we may be able to help in terms of one of our drivers picking you up in the morning and getting you to your accommodation in the evening.  However, all such arrangements are up to the individual to work out with a driver.
We are looking into whether some kind of car pooling arrangement may be feasible; we hope to have more information on that later.
If you wish to find hotel accommodation, we suggest you consult trivago.ca.
In addition, you may wish to consider the Lockhouse B&B (613-273-5147) in Westport and Chilvers B&B (613-692-3731) in Manotick. There are undoubtedly other B&Bs available.
If you wish to use a campground or other campsite, let us know and we'll do what we can, within limits, to help with the required transportation.  As of May 13, we are not aware of specific appropriate campsites; if you do know of a practical option in this regard, or any other low cost option, please let us know and we'll include it here.
Several of us have arranged to stay at St Lawrence college in Kingston on May 19 and 20, and hotels in Westport, Perth, Smiths Falls and Merrickville (through Trivago) on the 21st - 24th.  Arrangements for Manotick and Ottawa are somewhat more varied.
